I have windows 10.  I fell for the Windows defender security alert scam.  I want to run the scam removal program I found on Bleeping Computer but i have not backed up my data.  If I back up the data now will the malware/virus follow and be reinstalled?  If I complete all the steps without backing up, will i lose all my data?

Thanks.

Possibly & Possibly.  What makes you think you are infected ??   Should be asking this here : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-help/

or the lesser discussion forum : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/45/general-security/     Will get this moved to there till decide what you are going to do. EDIT : asked to get it moved and they moved it here.

Not understanding this.

If is text files, move to it's own folder, if pics the same as well movies, start categorizing like a filing cabinet as should be done anyways. .  Those can be scanned after have moved them to their own folder.

@bad6699 Encountering a Windows Defender security alert scam is indeed concerning. Your cautious approach is commendable. Here's the scoop:

1. Backup Smartly: While backing up, ensure the source isn't connected to the infected device. This helps avoid carrying malware into the backup. Although malware can potentially move, it's less likely in standard backup files.

2. Scan Backed-Up Data: To be safer, scan your backup with reliable antivirus software before restoring it. This adds a layer of assurance against potential malware.

3. Skipping Backup: If you skip backup, there's a chance of data loss during removal. But it's a balance between data preservation and minimizing risk.

4. Specialized Help: Seek advice on Bleeping Computer's virus removal or general security forums. Experts there can offer tailored guidance.

5. Organize Files: Categorize files (text, images, movies) for efficient scanning. This streamlines the process and helps identify potential threats.

In intricate scenarios like this, expert assistance is invaluable. Remember, safety comes first, and a knowledgeable community can provide the best steps for your specific situation.
