Hi - I have been using Google DNS settings (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) setup on both the router and my devices for a while now. Should i actually add in the Google IPv6 settings as well as I do use IPv6?

If so, would you put one IPv4 and one IPv6 in the router (it only accepts one primary and one secondary)? Or would you just add the IPv6 addresses to the settings on your device? I read somewhere it isn't good to put too many DNS addresses in, just maybe 2 or 3 - so would you do two IPv4 and one/two IPv6 in the device and just leave the router as is or...??

Appreciate any tips! thanks!!

Yeah, it would help to also include Google's IPv5 DNS servers too. It's more likely you're still predominantly relying upon IPv4 with IPv6 much less so, but both are active and in constant usage. When you do access heavy IPv6 web content you're online access is then relying upon the IPv5 servers from your ISP, the typical default option. So add IPv6 DNS servers so everything is bypassing your ISP's DNS for your own chosen DNS.

Google - IPv4

8.8.4.4
Google - IPv6

I'm just going to plug Quad9 and/or Cloudfare's DNS as better alternatives. Both, like Google's, are also free, public DNS services but I prefer them over Google's because of their developer's stance on Internet privacy and security issues. Google may be up on its DNS security aspects but it also lacks reliability on privacy matters. Most discussions about the advantages of using third-party DNS options center on speed advantages but tend to leave out security and privacy concerns.

Depending on your ISP their DNS service may be quick but do you actually trust it as far as security and privacy? Google's DNS may be quicker and be more secure but I think while speed is important consideration, it's also important to keep security and privacy in mind.

Quad9 - IPv4
9.9.9.9
149.112.112.112Z
Quad9 - IPv6

2620:fe::9

Cloudfare - IPv4
1.1.1.1
1.0.0.1
Cloudfare - IPv6
