I've had 30Mbps broadband from Vodafone (UK), and it's been upgraded to 900Mb fibre.

I ran in a hardwired cable directly to my hub, a distance of about 15m from my desktop PC, but I'm only getting ~60Mbps download and 120Mbps upload. Connecting my laptop, I'm getting the same speed.

Connecting to the network hub directly on a short network cable (1m) to my laptop, I'm getting full speed, ~600Mbps+. However, if I connect a long cable, ~10m, I'm only getting 40Mbps. The cable is rated Cat6. I've also tried three different cables now.

My PC is only a couple of years old, and the network adapter is rated for 1Gbps.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem might be. Any ideas??

Did you crimp the ends yourself?

Yes, but I've done loads of network installs, I know what I'm doing with cable ends. I've also checked them with a cable tester

Have you got any loops in the cable?

I would redo the ends and double check your work. We are all human and we do make mistakes.

OK, I dragged my desktop PC over to the router and got full speed out of it on a short cable. I then connected the long cable and I got full speed too.

Poking around, I've realised that the speed drops when I connect to my work VPN. I have no idea why it was changing before, but it's definitely repeatable, switching off the VPN on the long cable gives me full speed

Sorry for the mistaken question!

That would make sense, your works VPN is being used for the speedtest.

Bad cable can be ruled out, loops will not be a issue, drivers can be at fault, but also check the settings for the ethernet adapter for Large packet offload, etc. Change from auto to Full Duplex, power cycle the router and computer and use iperf3 between your desktop and another computer to test on the LAN, reset the network adapter properties with https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/
