my cursor jumps to the top right corner (or rarely, top left) inappropriately / without input. it has been occuring since i first got my computer about 3 years ago, and it was brand new. i haven't identified any specific triggers for it, it seems random(-ish). sometimes it will happen quite infrequently (every 20 minutes, maybe even every hour), but at other times it will happen very quickly and repeatedly, like 3 times per second and lasting for several minutes, and also everywhere in between. it seems somewhat more inclined to happen quickly/repeatedly when i have a lot of programs open (but this is not consistent), and when this occurs i usually just stop attempting to use my computer and then come back to it several minutes later, and then it will be better. it does not click on its own, it only clicks when i intentionally cause a click.

nothing appears visibly wrong with my trackpad (it looks clean, level, smooth). the problem will occur regardless of whether or not i am touching the trackpad. the problem still occurs when i am using a USB-connected drawing tablet or a USB-connected mouse. normal windows updates have not helped.

some info about my computer:

HP envy x360 convertible 15m-bq0xx running windows 10 home
AMD FX-9800P RADEON R7, 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G 2.70 GHz
8.00 GB RAM (7.47 GB usable)
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch support with 10 touch points

and heres what i've tried in order to make my cursor work properly:

go to settings > update & security > windows update > optional updates > driver updates > and then i updated the following drivers:
"insyde software - firmware - 9/22/2012 12:00:00 am - 6.3.0.3"
"advanced mirco devices, inc. - system - 4/1/2017 12:00:00 am - 1.2.0.46"
"advanced mirco devices, inc. - system - 3/31/2017 12:00:00 am - 1.2.0.50"
"advanced mirco devices, inc. - system - 5/14/2019 12:00:00 am - 5.12.0.38"
"hp development company, lp. - system - 7.0.18.1"
there were 2 other drivers listed as well, one for keyboard and one for display, which i did not update.
results: did not help.

go to device manager > mice and other pointing devices > synaptics smbus clickpad > update driver. results: did not help.
device manager > mice and other pointing devices > synaptics smbus clickpad > uninstall
results: did not help.

device manager > mice and other pointing devices > synaptics smbus clickpad > update driver (again. this is my attempt to reinstall the driver because i dont know what im doing. perplexingly, it then said the driver is already installed. i thought i just uninstalled it!)
results: did not help.

i then got a pop-up, title: system settings change. body: your hardware settings have changed. you must restart your computer for these changes to take effect. do you want to restart your computer now? (yes)(no)
i selected yes, and restarted.
results: did not help.

settings > update & security > windows update > optional updates > driver updates > and then i updated the following drivers:
"advanced micro devices, inc. - display - 9/25/2017 12:00:00 am - 22.19.180.513"
"hewlett-packard development company, l.p. - keyboard - standard 101/102-key or microsoft natural ps/2 keyboard for hp hotkey support"
results: did not help.

control panel > mouse > pointer options > enhance pointer precision OFF
results: did not help

settings > devices > touchpad > touchpad sensitivy set to LOW
results: did not help

set to MEDIUM: did not help.
set to HIGH: did not help.

set to MOST SENSITIVE: did not help.

device manager > human interference devices > HID compliant touch screen > DISABLE
results: did not help

for what it's worth, i'm sure there are other things that i tried before i started keeping this list, too. so far i haven't found ANY solutions, even temporary ones, to make the cursor simply stop moving around. i fall off cliffs in minecraft, i draw unwanted lines in my art, i move my files to the wrong folders, and i hate it. i know i should've sent it in to have it fixed while it was still under warranty but i didn't and that's that. if you can help me i'll be eternally grateful. my apologies if this is in the wrong forum - i truly do not know if it's a software problem or a hardware problem, but i do know that it's running windows 10.

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer!

Why is my mouse going to the top right corner?

Boot the computer into the Bios screen and check if the mouse pointer jumps to the top corner of the screen. This would confirm if it's either a hardware failure or an issue with the graphics card drivers so we may reinstall and update the drivers to fix the issue as mentioned above.

i tried this, but once in the BIOS screen, i didnt seem to have a cursor at all. it seemed to be navigated only by keys.

I would suggest disabling the touchscreen in the device manager. You may have issues with it and causing "ghost" clicks.

Hey I don't know if you still have this laptop or not BUT we have the EXACT same issue AND probably the exact same laptop. When I read this I felt so relieved that I'm not the ony one that is suffering from this. I want to know if you have saolved this problem or not, if you did please let me know.

Other things that I have noticed is that the "ghost clicking" will go away if you put your browser on fullscreen mode. So if the clicking gets really bad when I use a browser or open a certain website that can aggrevate the click's, I would just put on browser fullscreen mode. Also I have a suspicion that this laptop just needs more RAM (also bcs AMD just needs double RAM) and maybee that will fix this issue. Currently I cannot buy more RAM as that is out of my budget (struggling college student from a 3rd world country). So please try this <3

My family is really struggling financially since 2020 and I couldn't get a new laptop, please tell me if you or anyone can fix this issue since it would help tremendously for me.

Many Thanks

i'm relieved AND saddened to know i'm not the only one! i do indeed still have the same laptop with the same issue, but i think this computer is nearing the end of its lifespan (the screen busted apart at the hinges and fell completely off so i'm holding it together with binder clips, and once in a rare while it has scary crashes). i also can't buy more RAM in the foreseeable future because i'm poor. but if i ever do try that for this computer i'll let you know how it goes.

something my partner noticed is that if i use my TV as a second display and duplicate the display (same image on both screens) the mouse problem persists, but if i EXTEND the display (for example, two screens, one program on the laptop and one on the TV) AND have something fullscreened on the TV, for example VLC media player, then the cursor issue DOES NOT occur on the TV screen, only on the laptop screen. i haven't tried this with any games, only with video players (which don't require me to be like... DOING anything with my computer other than pointing my eyeballs at it), so I don't know how functional of a "fix" this would be, but it's something.

hoping things will start looking up for you and your family soon, and that college will be easy and serve you well :)
