There is a fair amount of concern on the part of quite a few members about the subject of AI generated posts on BC and the associated risks of copyright and plagiarism. This is a subject that has been debated at some length by the Mods and perhaps we forget that these discussions are only available to the Mods and this is one subject that deserves wider viewing. Among the conclusions we reached are the following -

The use of AI – such as ChatGPT and others – is not in itself inherently wrong. Hamluis summed it up as well as anybody when he said -

It matters not whether the substance of posted content is AI-generated or a summary put together by a posting member...what matters is the propriety and relevance of the response in regard to questions/discussions raised within the topic.

He also pointed out that copy/paste is also not inherently wrong as some prefer, as I am doing at the moment, to generate posts in a word processor and then paste them into a topic when you feel the text is sufficiently polished.

There is a real problem with plagiarism or breach of copyright. If you can find an exact match for the posted text elsewhere on the web than that is plagiarism. The laws on copyright vary somewhat from one jurisdiction to another but BC is a US registered site and US laws, including fair use, apply. If you are quoting someone it is only right to provide a link to the source and this should be done in all cases. There are various tests for AI generated text but at the moment none of them are sufficiently reliable to give a definite answer as my own experience of using them has shown me.

In summary.

By itself, the use of AI generated text is not against rules of BC, what matters is the relevance of the posted text

Word for word copying of someone else’s text without attribution is against the rules.

And spam is always spam, the only thing we have a ‘shoot on sight’ policy on in BC.

Not to minimize the apparent importance of the topic, but it seems like simple common sense to me:

1) Plagiarism is plagiarism.

2) Attribution is always appropriate.

3) A relevant response to a posted question / problem / topic is a relevant response, regardless of how it is generated or obtained.

The natural expectation for any kind of interactive online forum or online discussion forum is that GENUINE REAL HUMANS are the members who post, and genuine real humans are the authors who compose what become posted.  Do we need to worry about rules for this?

Just in case anyone is upset with the way I said that, let me express a little differently:

The natural expectation for any kind of interactive online forum or online discussion forum is that genuine real humans are the members who post, and genuine real humans are the authors who compose what become posted.  Do we need to worry about rules for this?

Good one !  Next time I want to start a new topic I'll enlist you as my speech writer, you would have saved me about 6 column inches of space !

Fair point. Apart from the now happily rare occasions when somebody bombards the forum with script generated spam virtually all posts on BC are generated by a real person regardless of the technology used. However the point of my post is that just because a post is generated either by use of AI or posted by means of copy/paste does not automatically make it fall under suspicion of being spam.

I'd say if the post appears to be AI generated edit the post and say this is copied from computer generated AI and should be taken with a grain of salt leaving the original post.

Why should an AI post not be helpful?

To my mind, AI's only problem is that it is not capable of original thought. However, it has a wider knowledge base than I/We have, so it might still be useful

It might be useful but it should be identified as AI.

How?

This post appears to be written by an AI generated response to a question. Please consider the advice cautiously.

I know this thread is old, but I do like cryptodan's #9 post suggestion in regard to potential AI postings.

I, for myself, would like to know if a post or portion of a post is AI generated because that way I know if that user is really using their brainpower to make a post.

Just my lowly opinion...
