No computer not attached to modem by cable. It's attached directly to my laptop.

Also, replies like this make me have to read them 2 or 3 times to make any sense of them. "Computer is not attached to the modem but it's attached to laptop?" How is a laptop not a computer?

I assume you meant "desktop computer"?

Apology, typo error.  I meant, my laptop is not attached to the modem by cable.  It's attached by ethernet wire.  My device is a laptop not desktop.

By wall plug i mean the modem power cord with brick plugged into power outlet on the wall.

Thank you. You've got some "homework" to do, so I'll just want until you've posted the rest of the information we've requested.

One other thing I forgot to mention: Have you moved your modem to another location since the problem began?

DSL modems can be sensitive to EMI and RFI as I described above. So, make sure as much as possible that your modem is nowhere near:

  • Fluorescent or LED lights/lamps etc.
  • Anything with large compressor/electric motor/rotor like a fridge, freezer, A/C unit, humidifier, dehumidifier, elevator, generator, garage door opener and so on.
  • Microwave oven
  • Cordless phone
  • Other miscellaneous wireless gear
  • Solar Power Inverter
  • Power supply for Laptop or similar (AKA "AC brick")
  • LCD monitor
  • Power supply for Computer
  • Mobile phone charger
  • Other charging devices
  • Television
  • Television set top boxes, including pay TV and Satellite
  • Video Player
  • Television
  • Lighting dimmer switches
  • Christmas or display lighting
  • Fax Machine or Printer
  • Masthead amplifier (TV signal booster)
  • Powerline telecommunications devices

Use https://www.imgbb.com to host images then share the bbcode info.

Your router maybe providing an inadequate connection limit where new connections cannot be made until older connections are removed.

What kind of network activity are you doing?

I am not using a router.  As I said, the modem is directly connected to my laptop (I guess network card as it's called) with ethernet wire.

Just to clarify a bit more .. the modem has 3 wires to it - ethernet connecting to the laptop, power cord connected to the wall power outlet and another ethernet type of wire connecting modem with phone jack.

Your modem has a model name and as such a model number should be located some place in the device. Easy to find.

Just to note that the screenshot so far provided shows that the laptop is in ariplane mode (so won't connect to wifi until that is turned off), but it is connected by ethernet cable (or tethered).

Nuke, is there a hotspot function in Windows now that I'm not aware of?

I think that was a terminology issue in the OP.

But Yes, Win 10 (and I assume 11) has a hotspot function, at least it does on this laptop (maybe not on a Desktop?)

Enabling it lets me connect other devices just like any other hotspot.

TBH though I'm not sure just how useful it is?
eg. in this screenshot my laptop is connected to wifi anyway and I could just connect the other device to the same wifi.
If my laptop was on an ethernet connection though, and remote from the router, or if the modem/router wasn't capable of wifi, I suppose it might be useful then.
Or maybe useful for IoT stuff?

Thanks Nuke. I guess we'll just await more information, then.

The modem brand/model says "Comtrend CT-5072T"

I ran the troubleshooting today when it didn't connect initially and it said "ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration."

Referring to my screenshot in my previous post above, it's not on airplane mode.  For that I  will need to select it and that window is highlighted blue.  The wifi, airplane mode and mobile hot spot are presently enabled but not turned on.

This morning when I couldn't connect soon after logging in, I unplugged the modem power cord from wall for 10 or 12 secs and thereafter it connected.  Each time it doesn;t connect the mobile hot spot button shows disabled.  But I think that is a part of the network setting config.  I don't think that's the cause of the problem.  Seems to me it's the modem that's done its time and needs to be replaced.

Your feedback please.

I would suggest you get a newer adsl modem one that allows for more connections to be made.

Ugh. IIRC, Comtrend are really cheap, junky modems. Also, this modem only does ADSL2+ up to 24MB/s download speed, which indicates how old and outdated it is. Most people are using newer modems, capable of both VDSL and ADSL with both better sync./negotiation and higher bandwidth/speeds. Nevertheless, unless proven otherwise, it is innocent until proven guilty and should still work fine with a little work. I don't see this as a modem problem. The user is not likely a power user.

In case you don't have a paper copy, here's the specification sheet for that model

https://us.comtrend.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CT-5072T-ADSL2-Single-Port.pdf

I strongly suggest you download it, and print a copy, in case your computer goes down or you lose data at some point.

Anyways, I gleaned from the screenshot, but in future you meant "Windows Networking Troubleshooter". The modem could have a troubleshooter too, thought this bargain model doesn't.

Please take screenshots of your Network adapter properties and IPv4 settings and post them here. Since this modem is only one-port Ethernet, I guess you're only using the one device, your laptop.

What tier of service/speeds are you paying for on your plan, download and upload?

And BTW, if something is enabled in IT, that generally means it is "turned on". Please don't differentiate between the two unless you can show us what you mean or at least where you mean it.

Yes I think so too.  I can either tell the ISP for another modem or buy a new one from them .. they have a store.

I read somewhere that invalid ethernet configuration has to do with some "DHCP" server.  Is that in my network or with my ISP ?

And I go on record stating that this it very likely NOT a modem problem. I suggest we fix the IP configuration, do some tests and see from there. We also haven't checked the modem logs yet. We also have no answers to many other questions asked.

Get a new modem if you want, but I believe the problem is on your PC. In which case, it won't fix the problem. Even if it does, it'll probably take 2 - 3 days to be shipped to you. What will you do in the mean time for Internet?

Why not just post the screenshots I mentioned a couple of posts up. It's 2 minutes of your time.

Which ISP are you with?

EDIT: What I linked was a spec. sheet, not a manual.
