Replacing a DSL modem is rarely a problem. Compatibility is pretty much universal and you can always ask your ISP if a model will work with their network. That is not always the case with cable, where they may force you to buy from the ISP directly.
Used modems are very cheap.
I recommend SmartRG for DSL modems. They work very well and are very reliable. For reliability, Zyxel are also very good. I find it rare that modems die, but it will depend on the modem, of course. I don't think I've ever had a modem last less than 10 years. My Mom's last Zyxel lasted about 15 years and was still going when we gave it away.

I agree. But since I've got this now and it seems to be connecting okay, so I would like to give it a try for as long as it works satisfactorily.
