Hi everyone:

I'm creating binder spine inserts using the Avery 89105 MS Word template.

https://www.avery.com/templates/89105

Here and there, I screw up and print the sheet of inserts without remembering to add text to every cell, so not every cardboard insert piece gets used.

I know you're generally not supposed to re-image the same page on a laser, but I find doing it rarely is okay (so far.)

Three of the spines, and the other waste/margin piece are already printed. I tried to modify the page layout, columns, margins, etc. in MS Word to match what I have remaining, but I can't figure out how to do that in MS Word.

What I want to configure in Word is the page size/layout/margins of two of these inserts attached to each other length-wise, just like the template. However, one strip is attached to one of the 0.5" strips of cardboard on each side of the original page that runs the 11" length of the page. Just one 0.5" piece on one side.

So, leftover, I have:

Spine (1.5" x 11)

-----------------------------------

Spine (1.5" x 11")

-----------------------------------

0.5" waste strip (0.5" x 11")

______________________

where -----

= perforation.

Does that make sense?  How do I configure the page layout/table/whatever for that in MS Word based on the existing Avery template (or from scratch)?

Does Highlight with Right Click / Copy and Paste not do that from a blank saved template.

Copy/Paste I said. What else would I be talking about using those terms as well as state copy past.

Or Take a Screen Shot and trim it to size and work with a jpeg or what ever format is best.

Is your issue, you tell us?

Hi, @Shplad:

If I understand you correctly, you want to print part of a page of “labels” (Avery 89105).

I don’t know what version of Windows or Word you’re using, but this works fine on MS Office 2021 Pro Plus under Win11 x64. I use a similar process when I print only one or some labels from a full sheet, albeit with a different template for mailing labels, etc.

  1. Open a new, blank Word document
  2. Click “Mailings” > “Labels”
  3. Click “Full page of the same label”
  4. Click “Options”
  5. Scroll down to 89105 & select it
  6. Click “New Document”
  7. You should see a Table in the 89105 Format
  8. Complete the table “cells” as you wish
  9. Print

If this isn’t clear, I can post screenshots.

Folks, I appreciate being helped, but it's not really help unless you carefully read my post and understand what I wrote.

I'm not printing labels, I'm printing binder spines.

I don't need to be told how to use a template. As I said in my first post, I already printed some binders spines, I just didn't use the entire page.

Now that I've used 3/5ths of the page, I need to know how to change the page, settings so that I can print on only 2/5ths of the page, as indicated in my diagram.

Howdy:

The instructions I provided will permit you to print the other 2/5ths of the page.

I use this method all the time, albeit for a different template.

I reuse a sheet of labels, printing only in the available, "unused" cells, and leaving blank those that correspond to labels from the sheet that were already used.

You just fill out the "cells" on the template that correspond to the ones you want to print, leaving blank the other cells (corresponding to the "spines"/"labels" you already printed.

I think you may be caught up with the "binder spines" nomenclature. To MS Word, they are all just "labels"....

Sorry I could not help

No, I think I got what you meant, but don't Word and the printer need to know I'm feeding 2/5ths of a page?

Maybe I should've made it clear that I removed two of the spine inserts from the cardboard sheet already. If so, do your instructions still apply?

So, these perforated binder spine labels are different from a sheet of adhesive labels.

Having said that, the printing process to print a "partial" sheet would probably work.

BUT It sounds as if the real issue/question is whether your printer can accept & properly handle a "partial" sheet, with some of the perforated binder spine labels removed??

I'd check with your printer user manual re: the size of paper, card stock & other materials it can handle.

Or maybe something at Avery support?

I never figured out how to do this. Canon said it wasn't possible. I still think it is, but it's not worth my time/trouble.

Thanks everyone.

I have generated copies of the Avery templates I use in a vector graphics package. These templates are essentially an array of label sized boxes spaced as per the specifications of the original templates. To use a single label on a part used sheet I open the template and type and format the text I want in say 1 label. Then, and this is important, before I run it through the printer I delete the template outline just leaving the text. Finally, if happy with the printed label, I do not save on closing the template. This leaves the template unchanged for the next time I want to use it.

In effect I am not printing a label on a pre-designed sheet but an A4 (Letter in your case) sized vector graphic which happens to contain a small amount of text in one small area. Works every time for me so long as I put the label sheet in the printer the right way up !

But how can the printer know how to feed a portion of a sheet?
