have a question about duplicates,i am in the process of restoring my photos after a error which ended with them being overwritten, that is another story.until now i have used a program called Cisdem duplicate finder to as it says find duplicates, untill now this has worked quite well, now i am trying to compare a folder of Whats app images copied from my phone with my main photo folder and it finds nothing, though i know there are many hundreds, as that is where the bulk of my pictures have come from.they are as far as i can tell all jpg,any reason why or another program i can try?

Hello,

I'm not familiar with the software you're using to detect duplicates files.

Many softwares that detect duplicate files are simply comparing primary data stream lengths and their associated binary content. (a common case, which sounds like what you want)

However, other softwares require matching not only the primary data stream, but also any alternate data streams/forks and possibly additional attributes like file create/access/modify date/times, etc.

Additionally, the software you're using may have a bug.  "Long" paths/filenames (greater than 260 bytes), unmapped network drive locations etc. often cause problems for novice programmers.

There are tons of free/paid file compare utilities;  Use your favorite search engine to find the one that works best for your needs.

Good luck!

Note : Windows 10/11 are suppose to have Duplicates.  It is unwise to delete OS files.

Use from Start Menu Disk Cleanup, run it, then run again after Clicking on clicking on Cleanup System Files.

Another good program is System Ninja from respectable site : https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5020-system-ninja.html

Good luck on the Foto Compare.  Note do not use a On-line Dup checker as the fine print will allow them ownership most often.
